Sci-Fi City
A sniper looking over a CG sci-fi cityscape environment
Tracking
I tracked the footage in PFTrack. I rotoscoped out any moving elements such as the candle light and the person, so that they did not confuse the tracker.

Modelling
I modelled multiple different buildings to create the scene. The closer the buildings were, the more geometric detail I gave them. I also modelled a bridge and motorway to add more variety to the scene.

Texturing
I imported all my models into Substance Painter. The buildings either had metallic or concrete textures. In both cases I added heavy weathering and dirt to the models to give them a grungy feel. I created a tarmac texture for the roads on the motorway, rest of the motorway being concrete.

Lighting
I used an HDRi of a cloudy sky as my main light. I reduced its intensity to make it appear more like a night-time scene. The emissive maps of the building lights helped to add some fill lighting into the environment. I also added lights onto the motorway. I added large lights of varying colours outside the environment pointing towards the building to give the impressive there are more buildings out of frame casting light.

Compositing
I began by keying the footage of the sniper, removing any elements that I did not want at all, such as tracking markers. After this I combined it with the render of the cityscape. I used the depth pass to defocus the shot and add mist. I then colour-corrected the footage to darken it and give it a blue tint to match the render, finishing the shot.
