Kitchen Scene
An interior shot of a kitchen. My aim with this project was to make the scene appear as photorealistic as possible
Research and Inspiration
I began this project by researching kitchens and took note of various designs. I then collected various images of items often found in kitchens, such as cutlery, tables and chairs.
Modelling
Once I had completed my research of kitchens, I then began modelling the scene. I started by blocking out the room, and then iterating on the scene by adding various details, such as cupboards, tables and chairs. After this I modelled the finer details, such as a phone left on the cupboard, as well as a note board on the left side of the shot.
Texturing
I then moved on to texturing. I followed the reference images I had researched to ensure the textures of my models matched their real-life counterparts, and were as realistic as possible.
Lighting
Next, I lit the scene. The main source of light in the scene was an HDRi of a sky which lit the scene through the window. I then added various interior lights, such as the ceiling lights, as well as the cupboard lights.
Compositing
Once I rendered the scene out of Maya I moved on to compositing. At this stage I made various small refinements to the shot. One aspect of the render I was unhappy with was the level of dirt I had added to the walls in the scene, I felt there was too much. However, since I had rendered an albedo AOV, I was able to separate the textures from the lighting in the scene. I then colour corrected the wall texture to reduce the contrast, thus hiding the grunge somewhat. I then combined this back with the scene lighting, thus reducing the grunge. As well as this I added subtle mist and depth of field effects, as well as a glow on the window from the outside light, and glow effects to the lights in the rooms.
